| Description: | The Southern Magnolia is a distinctive evergreen tree with large, creamy fragrant white flowers and large glossy evergreen leaves with fuzzy deep brown undersides. Flowers can be brought inside and floated in a bowl of water, and will perfume the air with their delicate fragrance. The flowers are followed by decorative seedpods filled with bright red-orange berries. Moderately fast growing. Many different cultivars are available. If you are a little tight on space, see 'Little Gem Magnolia', which is a dwarf form. Bracken's Brown Beauty (pictured) is one of the best for our area, displaying excellent cold tolerance and superior deep brown leaf backs. All Southern Magnolias need protection from drying winter winds, or severe windburn and defoliation can occur. Beautiful planted as a lawn specimen, the only drawback to this magnificent tree is the large leaves that fall and decompose very slowly. Some people consider it a messy tree because of the leaf shed. If you have a large property, site it far enough away that the leaves are not unsightly. Even with the leaf shed, the spectacular glory of a Southern Magnolia in full bloom is a sight to behold. |
